Pediatric Global Surgery

Did you know that two-thirds of children worldwide lack access to safe surgical care? In many places around the world like sub-Saharan Africa, nearly half of the population is under 18 years old, and more than 95% of the population is without access to safe and timely surgical care.

At UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, our pediatric surgeons support efforts to ensure that all children have access to safe surgical care when they need it. Led by Robin Petroze, MD, MPH, the global surgery program partners with pediatric surgeons around the world for clinical care, education and research. We believe that by educating medical students, residents and surgeons at home and abroad, we can not only improve access to safe surgery for children in resource-limited settings, but also stimulate awareness to the role of poverty and social determinants of health in health outcomes.

Our research involves multidisciplinary innovations and collaborations to improve the way we deliver surgery, whether that be cost, access or health care disparities. Here at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, we believe that every child has a right to a healthy and productive life.

Dr. Petroze has created strong ties with local medical communities in underserved countries throughout the world.
