UF Health Shands Hospital recognized as one of nation’s best hospitals
University of Florida Health Shands Hospital has been recognized among the nation’s best hospitals in seven adult medical specialties, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2015-16 Best Hospitals rankings released today (July 21).
Overall, UF Health Shands Hospital was recognized as one of the best hospitals in Florida. UF Health Jacksonville also was named a top hospital in Florida and in the Jacksonville region.
“We are pleased that U.S. News & World Report has once again recognized the efforts of our faculty and staff in providing safe, quality care to our patients and in advancing new discoveries that promise to further improve the care our patients receive in the future,” said David S. Guzick, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for health affairs at UF and president of UF Health. “As an academic health center, we have an unwavering dedication to advancing care, and this recognition demonstrates that.”
U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across the country to determine rankings in 16 adult medical specialties. Only 3 percent of these hospitals earned top 50 rankings in at least one specialty.
The seven adult medical programs at UF Health Shands Hospital ranked among the top 50 in each specialty nationally include nephrology (tied for 13th), diabetes and endocrinology (28th), pulmonology (29th), urology (37th), neurology and neurosurgery (40th), cardiology and heart surgery (tied for 42nd) and cancer (46th). UF Health Shands Hospital was the highest ranked in the state in adult nephrology and pulmonology.
“This increase in momentum for our medical programs is a direct reflection of the hard work and commitment our faculty and staff bring to work each day,” said Michael Good, M.D., dean of the UF College of Medicine.
In addition to being ranked among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in seven specialties, UF Health Shands Hospital also was listed as “high performing” in five additional specialties, including gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, orthopedics, and ear, nose and throat.
“The rankings validate my opinion — that our physicians, nurses and staff provide high-quality care to patients in all specialties,” said Ed Jimenez, CEO of UF Health Shands. “This is why physicians send patients here from all over the state and country to receive the highest standard of care.”
UF Health Jacksonville was listed as high performing in three specialties, including nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology.
To configure the rankings, U.S. News takes into account patient survival rates and safety data, and other care-related factors such as nurse staffing.
Earlier this year, UF Health Shands Children's Hospital was recognized in seven pediatric medical specialties in the 2015-16 U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals rankings: diabetes and endocrinology (16th), cardiology and heart surgery (29th), cancer (29th), pulmonology (34th), neonatology (37th), nephrology (40th) and gastroenterology (49th).
